Sherlock Holmes appears to be a confident man and puts everything he has into all the cases that he works. He is extremely thorough and doesn’t settle for less and takes extreme pride in what he does. Holmes’s career is of definite importance to him and he is dedicated to solving cases. He is confident, not out of pride but from hard work and knowing the strength in his abilities. Holmes questions Watson sternly but through respect and always congratulates Watson afterwards. In chapter 1 while they're trying to figure out whom Doctor Mortimer is he says to Watson, “’Good!’” said Holmes. “’Excellent.’” He doesn’t put himself above Watson but rather holds him to an equal standard. Holmes. Throughout chapter 3 Holmes was always looking at the smallest details of a person and reads beyond what is in front of him. This characteristic allows him to deeply respect and sympathize for people in the case such as Dr. Mortimer; this also gives him a deeper love for the profession he holds dearly to himself.
Watson is less independent and confident while always relying on Holmes’s observations before his own. He greatly respects Holmes and admires Holmes’s great line of work. He talks to Holmes not as a co-worker but as a friend and with great respect. It is a mutual friendship, Holmes says, “’No, this is my friend Dr. Watson.” This shows the closeness of the two colleagues which adds to their efficiency as a team. I believe Watson also deeply loves his profession. He looks to Holmes for guidance throughout the cases and wants to learn from him. Watson is a good detective but doesn’t read into people as accurately as Holmes. However, I don’t think Watson envies Holmes but has a significant admiration for it instead.
